Working for a boutique fitness business, started by an inspiring pair of Australian health and wellness practitioners and successful entrepreneurs, was not at all what Ivy Guo expected when she enrolled in a Professional Year with Navitas.
Ivy had recently graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Commerce and several years of part-time bookkeeping and EA experience back home in China. Despite her stellar qualifications, Ivy was really nervous and unsure about how to sell herself to prospective employers, she was struggling to get interviews. When we asked Ivy what she found most valuable about the 32 weeks of employability training she told us “…business communication skills, project management, resume writing and interview preparation, lots of role playing – the Internship Managers are actually tougher than real interviewers! By the time I got to my 1st interview, I aced it; I knew how to respond to all the questions.”
In sharing internship experiences with friends that enrolled at other institutions, Ivy felt confident that the internship she had at Navitas provided her with real-world work experience; and was not stuck with filing, photocopying and answering phones all day. Ivy recommends Navitas Professional to her friends because “Navitas monitor and check-in on your progress, my mentor and I agreed on a training plan, followed it, and added new tasks to it as I improved and gained more skills. By the end of the three months we had a record of my achievements, and I had a host of new skills as well as the practical accounting skills I had expected to get.”
Ivy wasn’t the only one who benefitted from the internship, we spoke to her manager Kylie Roberts, co-founder of Aleenta BARRE about her experience hosting the company’s first intern. Kylie told us “Ivy was our first graduate intern, and we have had an awesome experience with her. Her skill level is excellent and she has been a dream to work with. We decided to take on an intern as we required some assistance with a project, but didn't have the resources to complete it internally. When we heard about the structure of the internship this worked perfectly for us and has resulted in Ivy continuing to work with us.”
Kylie went on to say “the structure of an internship, where the intern is fully qualified but needing work experience, was perfect for us as it enabled us to spend time training Ivy in our business without being too concerned about blowing out our wages costs. A major benefit was also getting to understand whether an in-house finance person was what we needed as we have previously sourced this externally.”
Not having hosted an intern before, Kylie and her team were a little concerned it might involve mountains of paperwork, but they were pleasantly surprised at how easy the process was. “For us the best outcome has been having Ivy as part of our team and the ease with which this has happened. We have used a number of book-keepers/finance people in the past and it is hard to find someone good! Ivy is excellent and we could not recommend the internship program more highly. We are actually now keen to organise an internship for a marketing graduate in our SA office.”
As far as Ivy is concerned, completing the Professional Year was a great experience. “The trainers at Navitas are so professional; they demand punctuality, enforce a professional dress code and have very high expectations of participants. The professional attitude prepared me really well for the expectations of the workplace.”
We would like to thank the team at Aleenta BARRE for partnering with us, and we look forward to finding them a suitably qualified marketing intern for the Adelaide studio in 2017!
